The Friesian Lakes project has achieved a great deal in the field of infrastructure. Aqueducts have been built, channels deepened and bridges raised. Limitless sailing has great priority. The time has now come to make use of this infrastructure and to reinforce the Friesian economy.

Plans for a strong future

The Masterplan formula has been devised in order to take full advantage of the potential of a water sports area. A masterplan is tailor-made. It is a municipal plan whose preparation lays great emphasis on consultation with and stimulation of enthusiasm among the corporate community and the residents. Support is essential. On developing a masterplan, it must be based on the identity of the municipality, also including the historic character of the area and the landscape. It must also look at the strengths and weaknesses in terms of water sports. At the same time, an inventory is made of individual initiatives (also by businesses and clubs), the purpose being to develop an integrated plan for the three policy spearheads: improving powers of attraction, accessibility and income. The Frisian Lakes project uses 'Building blocks' for this purpose. These are the guidelines and areas of attention for the municipality, aimed at realisation of the intended final result. They include 'Keep banks public' and 'Further develop the history of the locality' but also 'apply interactive plan formation'. All the information thus gathered will be forged into a vision, with the aid of the building blocks. This vision will form the basis for formulation of the masterplan.
