Doing business with the Frisian Lakes project
The Frisian Lakes project develops, finances and promotes projects which reinforce the Frisian economy. In concrete terms: employment in the Frisian water sports sector must be increased by 30% in the future. This means 1200 extra jobs when compared with the reference point at the start in the year 2000. The Frisian Lakes project wishes to reinforce the economy by stimulating extra expenditure on the Frisian mainland, by for example:
- improving the attraction of harbours and water sports centres
- creating extra overnight moorings in the water sports centres
- developing extra facilities for families, such as beaches and playing areas
- linking up the water sports centres in order to increase the sailing area
“The economy of the water is a central issue for us”, explains Jannewietske de Vries, member of the provincial executive of Fryslân. “The water offers us both challenging tasks and unique opportunities. We must undertake them with care.” According to Jaap Goos, programme manager of The Frisian Lakes project, the plans offer many opportunities for businesses. “ The government has invested a great deal in the Frisian waters. Businesses can do the same. It is not a one-way process. I would like to invite businesses to share any plans they are making and to react to our investments. This will allow us to reinforce each other.”
A good example of such enterprise is the Classical Ships harbour in Terherne. GPTV produced a film about this.
