The Friesian Lakes project is a cooperative agreement of the Friesian municipalities, the Fryslân water board, De Marrekrite recreation company, and other branch and nature organisations of the province of Fryslân.

The Frisian Lakes statistics

  • The total Frisian water area is 15,000 hectares in size. These are the Frisian Lakes inccluding all connecting channels and side/minor channelss
  • The Frisian Lakes themselves are 9300 hectares in size (for comparison, a football field is 1 hectare)
  • There are approximately 35 lakes in the Frisian lake area The best-known are: Hegemer Mar, De Fluezen, De Holken, De Morra, Sleattemer Mar, Grutte Brekken, De Kûfurd, Langwarder Wielen, Witte Brekken, Swarte Brekken and Aldhôf, Tsjûkemar, Snitser Mar, Goaiïngarypster Puollen, Terkaplester Puollen, Idzegeaster Poel, Grutte Gaastmar, Sânmar, Ringwiel, Flakke Brekken, Aldegeaster Brekken, Jiskenhúster Mar, Terhernster Puollen, De Hoarne, Brandemar, Nannewiid, Burgumer Mar, De Leien, Grutte Wielen, Lauwersmeer, Pikmar and the Eeltsjemar
  • In-between all this water, there are two National Landscapes (South West Fryslân and the Northern Fryske Wâlden) and four National Parks (Lauwersmeer, Schiermonnikoog, the Drents-Friese Wold and the Alde Feanen)
  • The province of Fryslân took over ownership of the lakes in 2009. The Frsian Lakes were previously owned by the RVOB (government real estate and development agency) of the Ministry of Finance.
  • Fryslân is a popular and appreciated destination for boating holidays and water recreation. In the National Water sports Study (initiated by Eileen), this preference for Fryslân as a water sports destination was indeed confirmed. Fryslân is a very clear favourite, particularly because of the countryside, the quietness and the friendly population. The Frisian water sports centres were given 7.8 out of 10.

  • 35% of recreational boats with an own yacht/cruiser visited Fryslân for a boating holiday in 2009.
