The purpose of the Friesian Lakes project is to reinforce the Friesian economy. This goes hand-in-hand with reinforcement of the quality of nature and the landscape. A sustainable working method is an important precondition in all activities of the Friesian Lakes project .

Electric sailing

Nowhere else in the Netherlands is there such a great concentration of water sports as in Fryslân. The Frisian Lakes project and the provincial authorities are therefore working together with the Stichting Elektrysk Farre Fryslân (SEFF) [ link], the business community, knowledge institutes and other authorities in order to stimulate sustainable water tourism, and thereby employment. Besides special routes for electrically driven boats, work is underway on standardisation of drive systems and certification of companies. Fryslân can play a pioneering role for the Netherlands. The know-how and experience gained here, can also be deployed for electric vehicles for example. Fryslân is to become even clean and quieter.

The amazing experience of electric sailing through the fantastic Frisian countryside is no Utopia. There are charging points with green energy (16 ampere) along many sailing channels. Click on the map [ link] to check out where the charging points are. For large (rental) cruisers, Sneek is the first location in north-west Europe to offer a high-voltage charging point.

Subsidy for electric sailing

Around 100 companies and private persons have recently taken advantage of the subsidy scheme for fitting an electric motor. Many of them are boat rental companies. In order to make the use of electric and hybrid drives widely accessible, recreational boats can make use of the subsidy scheme until 13 August 2011. Within the scope of this scheme, the provincial authorities offer a contribution in the costs for anyone installing an electric drive system in a new boat. Furthermore, subsidies are provided when standard fuel engines in boats are replaced by an electric drive system.
