Water has always been an important driving force for economic development in Fryslân. That is why the Friesian Lakes project is working at larger and more attractive sailing areas. The most important sailing areas are now connected to each other all year round, through construction of aqueducts and higher bridges.

Sustainability

The accessibility of Fryslân by road and by water is extremely important. However, a good entrance point is only half of the story for a water sports area. The Frisian Project therefore looks further ahead than simply the infrastructure, and is initiating projects together with municipalities, in order to improve the tourist quality of water sports centres.

Masterplan

Infrastructure is not an aim in itself. The second phase of the Frisian Lakes project is about more than simply 'limitless sailing'. Instead, this phase is particularly aimed at reaping the benefits of the investments already made (more expenditure on shore), innovation, nature and sustainability. Together with the municipalities in question, the province has formulated a Masterplan for the most important water sports centres and entrance points. The aim is to make improvements in the waterfronts of villages and towns, and to modernise facilities such as mooring places, waste water and fuel points, as well as constructing and improving sanitary facilities. Such Masterplans are made in order to cohesively realise detailed plans by the various municipalities.
