Aquaducts
Sailing through the south-western part of the Frisian lakes has become even more attractive. The construction of five aqueducts has made life easier for recreational boats: they can simply sail through instead of waiting for bridges.
Galamadammen
aquaduct
The Galamadammen aqueduct, taken into use at the end of 2007, ensures that the sailing traffic in the Johan Frisokanaal and the road traffic on the N359 trunk road (between Bolsward and Balk) no longer cause problems for each other. Sailing draught: 3.50 metres
Houkesloot
aquaduct
The Houkesloot aqueduct has been part of the urban ring road of Sneek since 2003. It relieves the town centre of Sneek and is an improvement for recreational shipping. Sailing draught: 3.50 metres
Jeltesleat aquaduct
Since 2007, the Jeltesleat aqueduct near Hommerts-Jutrijp has replaced the Jeltesleat Bridge, which until then was the busiest bridge of Fryslân. Sailing draught: 3.50 metres
Geau aquaduct
The Geau aqueduct became an important part of the busy A7 trunk road at Sneek in 2008. It renders the town more accessible and offers recreational boats an alternative route for the Prinses Margrietkanaal. Sailing draught: 2.25 metres
Ie
aquaduct
The Ie aqueduct was opened in 2007 and put an end to the cramped and unsafe situations for recreational boats at the bridge in the centre of Woudsend. Sailing draught: 2.00 metres
Aquaduct N31
The N31 road (from Zurich via Harlingen to Leeuwarden) is to be constructed at a low level for nearly two kilometres. Part of this is an aqueduct in the Van Harinxmakanaal. The existing exit and access roads in Harlingen will be merged to give one central connection, the so-called ‘Haarlemmermeer solution’, which will be constructed in the Spaansen / Perseverantia area.
Date of completion: 2017.
De
Centrale As aquaduct
As part of De Centrale As (the central axis), an aqueduct is to be constructed to the west of Burgum. The central axis will then pass under the Prinses Margrietkanaal as a low-level aqueduct. With the arrival of this aqueduct, a safer and more orderly situation will be created for road transport and shipping.
Date of completion: 2015
Haak
aquaduct around Leeuwarden
Within the project to access Leeuwarden, an aqueduct will replace the Drachtsterbrug bridge over the Van Harinxmakanaal. In the future, the road will lead under the aqueduct, bringing the traffic back out at the Drachtsterplein, at the only leftover traffic lights. Bicycles will be separated from motorised traffic, through one of the four bike tunnels.
Date of completion: 2015
